We live in an age where children can speak confidently about the environment, and wonder out loud how to interact with nature in a way that is less impactful, more harmonious. Damn wish I’d been that aware at their age.

Here I’m with Jane Hasell-McCosh @dalemainmansion @marmaladeawards where we spent a morning at the beautiful Hizuchi Elementary School in #Yawatahama, the city where the @yawatahama_marmalade_festival was held.
????
This school building was the winner of the 2012 @worldmonumentsfund @knollinc prize for its restoration, and learned about the school’s history and architectural details described to us with a tour and essays written and spoken by the school’s junior students.
????
The school building was designed in 1956-1958 by postwar modernist architect #MatsumuraMasatsune #松村正恒 #建築家 #ともうひとつのモダニズム, and was radical in its time for the way it interacted with the environment: allowing air to circulate through its form, used local wood in its build, creating light-filled spaces for the children to work in.
