This weekend @whichuk announced the results of their massive complex supermarket taste-off where the premium mince pies & Christmas puddings of Britain’s major retailers were judged by a crew including baker Patrick Moore @moreartisan, Kat Roberts @breadaheadbakery, food writer Suzy Pelta @suzypelta, star chef Ryan Simpson @orwells_rest, Charlotte Marrifield, owner of Harrogate Cake Company.
And me, revelling in my description “Dan Lepard, mince pie and pudding taster”, a job I have longed for if alas only once a year at Christmas.
The winners were @asda for the best premium mince pies and @icelandfoods for the best Christmas puddings. There’s a link in my IG profile to the full details on the Which website (though only subscribers can see the full details for all the entries). The reviewing process is very complex and completely “blind”, as the tasting samples are spooned onto plates in a random order – all the judges are tasting different pies and puddings at any one time – and are only titled by a code of letters and numbers that only the Which team know the details of. Very impressive, and uphold their belief that they offer reviews based on impartial judgement.
Plus you get a mini recipe from me for mincemeat curd tartlets aka Christmas Cheesecake Tarts, with an amaretti crumble top. Will having you scoffing even more mincemeat at Christmas
