Planes, trains & automobiles: the road to #Yawatahama #八幡浜市 #Ehime #愛媛県from #Matsuyama #松山市, two cities on the coast of #Japan’s island #Shikoku #四国, the journey to the citrus heartland of the @yawatahama_marmalade_festival. As in Ehime, there are so many relatively unknown sights and experiences on the different islands of Japan, but given how huge the country is it takes planning to get there and avoid underestimating the time it takes to get around.

I think at-heart I always hope to go to out-of-the-way places and see the less common sights in communities that aren’t overwhelmed by tourism. So I find I use a combination of international and domestic @japanairlines_jal #flyJAL – for speed covering distance – then local JR train travel – as much for the views as well as the relaxing pace – then finally a car, bicycle or walking to get to the really hidden places.

However travelling today for most of us seems a tricky balance between the environmental impact travel inevitably has against the care and respect we want to show when we’re at our destination. Especially when we’re trying to pack a lot into a short break. So you just do your best in the brief time you have.

Back in May last year, for the 2019 @yawatahama_marmalade_festival @marmaladeawards @dalemainmansion, held in beautiful Ehime I flew @japanairlines_jal #flyJAL to Matsuyama, home to #dogoonsen – thought to be one of the oldest hot spring spas in Japan – the travelled by car down the coast road to the port of Yawatahama – home to the ancient terraces citrus farms and a bustling fish market – then on return took the JR #yosanline through the rolling Ehime countryside back to Matsuyama.
