Out with director friend @donaldmaccoutts down from Scotland, ate at @mildredsrestaurants Kings Cross. Went there because a few weeks back I’d had a fantastic lunch with @sejalsukhadwala who’d invited me to go with her to #mildredsdalston, exceptional cooking, and though #mildredskingscross didn’t quite match that level, was still left with a feeling eaten a fine nutritionally varied and vegetable-rich meal. I ate pretty much the same dishes at both Mildreds: started with roasted cauliflower, leeks and almonds on garlic potato purée; then had a stir fry with fried tofu & black rice; washed down with mint kombucha. Don had the beet burger and his mate had the “chick’n” (tofu?) burger. Donn pointed out that with a vegan burger the bun is more annoying than helpful, as there’s nothing to soak up and the double carb filling+bun is a hard slog. Whereas falafel in pita gets the balance right. Would a burger be a burger without the bun? There’s a question. Had rice “buns” in Tokyo last year at @mosburger_japan, they were good.
