Most weeks here I display pictures of the meals I eat, hopefully encouraging you to cook with new ideas, awaken forgotten old recipes or discover new ingredients. But there’s an assumption behind these pictures… that you will have enough money to pay for the food on your plate. So together with @FoodBankAU I’m pausing to think about the #HiddenHunger in our world, and would ask you to visit www.foodbank.com.au website to work out how we create #ZeroHunger going forward.
????
The sobering truth is that many people – especially women – simply can’t afford to pay for food some days, and live with the constant threat of hunger. Let’s call this #HiddenHunger – the hashtag promoted by @FoodBankAU today to highlight this reality – but sadly it’s only “hidden” because I/we rarely stop to check on neighbours and friends and ask if they’re ok. In Australia, a country where we brag about all the food we have to eat, a shocking 1 in 4 women will have moments where they just don’t have the money to feed themselves. @FoodBankAU’s studies have found that mothers are twice as likely than fathers to feel that they are the bad parent when their children go hungry. Many women are also escaping or somehow coping with domestic violence, a shocking fact that worsens the hopelessness they face.
????
So if you can today just pause with food pictures and instead help highlight on social media or in conversations with friends the hunger many people face in our world. Let’s all work towards #ZeroHunger with @FoodBankAU.
