From last Tuesday, Andrea Brabazon’s @LoaferBread Melbourne Australia crew: (from l to r) Deepak Mahajan @mahajan_deepak2 (shaping and baking those gorgeous loaves); Raymond Chang (rolling those croissant and danish so well); Nick Cruiciani @nickcru (turning out secret-ingredient choc chip cookies); Matt Keele (crafting those great sandwiches); the extra-extraordinary Andrea Brabazon (owner and baker-with-brilliance); and the marvellous Christine Tran (hugely talented baker and traveller, and soon to be bakery owner).

I first stumbled into @Loaferbread just when it opened back around 2002 (by Canadian brothers Georg and Antoine von Baich). Since then Andrea has steered it though to calmer waters and, to me and many others, inspires sensitivity and skilfulness with curiosity and surprise from her bakers and ingredients. I’m very in awe of what Andrea has achieved. I had a moment to compare tray-mark arm burns with here – possibly people out outside of baking and cooking will be unaware of these scalds, they do scar but fade to almost nothing, a bit like life itself – and hear about the efforts Andrea goes to in sourcing the best ingredients, such a change from the old days when many bakers I knew would pride themselves on cheapness and haste.

Do visit, and like me, be wowed. And lets all make more of a noise about the great talented #womeninbaking
