Do you bake more in winter or summer?

Postby Dan Lepard on Wed Jan 10, 2007 1:27 pm

I've noticed that the forum has been getting busier in the summer, and less so in the winter for a few years now. So there is a poll (above) to see what you do. And post below any thoughts about it.

Dan,
maybe because of climate change there is a difficulty in determining what season we are in? For me being a chef, I find winter is busier to some degree and am stuck to baking at the end of the week! But as you know I will bake whenever given a chance, inbetween shifts and after normal hours, morning and night!

There is blossom on the trees outside my window already. I wonder whether holidays in summertime allow more time for baking?

During the heatwave and blackout last summer I baked, suppose I am a bad judge for this poll!

I noticed not much was happening on the board over the hoilday period, so I guess Bakers do take Holidays

At Home, I bake far more often in the cold months. In fact, I never bake when the air conditioning is on. Too Cheap, I guess, to both cool and heat the house at the same time.

If I should ever get an outside oven, I probably would bake about the same year 'round. Inside , of course in the winter.

baking outside is not all its cracked up to be

I do have the outside oven but stuggle with the fact that my other half has yet to install an outside light! So in the winter baking after 4pm gets difficult, its ok while the oven is heating up its easy to see the fire but getting the bread in and out in the pitch black is a bit more tricky, I've now learned not to rest the torch just inside the oven door as they keep melting! not to mention tripping over the cats carrying racks of reallly hot bread and throwing them all over the grass.

you have an outside oven fiona!!

i am very jealous!!

you could always use a head torch to solve the darkness issue, i use one to chop wood in the dark and i still have two hands and legs (that is two of each!)

I am probably baking bread more in the summer to match the increased energy expenditure from long days out cycling (one of my other 'passions'!)
